Redondo Union Volleyball Triumphs Over Mira Costa in Thrilling Match
In an exhilarating showdown Thursday night, the Redondo Union volleyball team defied expectations, clinching a hard-fought 3-2 victory against the top-ranked Mira Costa squad. The action unfolded in Redondo’s gym, where the Sea Hawks showcased their determination and resilience, overcoming their South Bay rivals in a tightly contested match with set scores of 27-25, 21-25, 25-22, 21-25, and 15-13.
"The chemistry on our team was key,” said setter Tommy Spalding, who, along with two other teammates, is set to continue his academic and athletic career at MIT. All three had crucial performances during the match.
In a pivotal moment, Carter Mirabal executed a crucial block, followed closely by Vaughan Flaherty’s kill, assisted by Spalding—a display of teamwork that exemplified the Sea Hawks’ synergy on the court. JR Boice, who has committed to Long Beach State, consistently delivered powerful kills. Meanwhile, Cash Essert’s serving and overall performance effectively kept Mira Costa’s Mateo Fuerbringer in check. Fuerbringer, however, found his footing in the fifth set, contributing six kills as Mira Costa threatened with an 11-9 lead, but Redondo managed to rally back for the win.
This victory marks only Mira Costa’s second defeat in 25 matches, allowing Redondo Union to seize first place in the Bay League.
