Rams Fall Short After Leading by 16 Points in Close 38-37 Game Against Seahawks
Seahawks Stun Rams with Overtime Victory
In a thrilling showdown on Thursday night, the Seattle Seahawks made a remarkable comeback to defeat the Los Angeles Rams 38-37, claiming a one-game lead in the NFC West. The victory was secured when quarterback Sam Darnold connected with Jaxon Smith-Njigba for a touchdown in overtime, followed by a successful 2-point conversion pass to Eric Saubert.
As the game unfolded, the Seahawks, down by 16 points in the fourth quarter, demonstrated resilience and tenacity. Darnold’s pivotal play tied the game at 30-all, a result of a deflected pass initially ruled incomplete but later reviewed as a backward pass. Rashid Shaheed’s 58-yard punt return touchdown, complemented by a 2-point conversion from Darnold to Cooper Kupp, reignited Seattle’s hopes.
In overtime, the Rams initially struck first with a touchdown by Matthew Stafford to Puka Nacua, bringing the score to 37-30. Nacua’s impressive performance included 12 catches for 225 yards and two touchdowns, while Stafford accumulated 457 yards passing — the third-highest in his career.
Despite the Rams’ offensive dominance, totaling 581 yards without a turnover, Seattle’s defense stepped up at crucial moments, forcing four punts and a missed field goal during the Rams’ final five possessions of regulation. The Seahawks clinched a playoff berth with this victory, improving their record to 12-3.
Although Darnold faced challenges with two interceptions, including a notable pick by defensive end Kobie Turner, he demonstrated poise under pressure, ultimately finishing the game with 270 passing yards and two touchdowns.
Injury reports indicated concerns for both teams; Rams offensive lineman Kevin Dotson left the game in the first quarter with an ankle injury, while the Seahawks saw three secondary players exit in the fourth quarter due to various injuries.
The Rams will next face the Atlanta Falcons on Monday, December 29, while the Seahawks will travel to play the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, December 28.
