Rainy Christmas Ahead: Pineapple Express Storm Set to Impact LA Region
Heavy Rainfall Expected Over Christmas Weekend in Southland
Residents of Southland should prepare for a significant weather event as a Pineapple Express storm approaches, bringing heavy rainfall to the region. Forecasters predict that the storm will begin delivering rain in multiple waves starting late Tuesday and continuing through Saturday, with Christmas Eve expected to see the heaviest downpours.
NBC4 Meteorologist Belen De Leon reports that this weather system will tap into an atmospheric river, resulting in increased moisture and higher snow levels in the mountains. City officials have already begun preparations in response to the forecast, emphasizing the importance of indoor plans or the need for an umbrella during the holiday festivities.
The rainfall is projected to range from 1 to 3 inches in many areas, with mountain regions potentially receiving up to 5 inches in the initial wave. A second surge of precipitation may add another 1 to 2.5 inches, with mountain areas facing an additional 4 inches. Snow levels are expected to descend to around 6,000 feet.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has warned of strong southeasterly winds beginning on Tuesday, with peak gusts anticipated on Christmas Eve. Many areas are likely to experience advisory-level winds, while some mountain regions could see more severe gusts. Authorities caution that the considerable rainfall may lead to widespread hydrologic issues, including flooding, mudslides, and travel disruptions, highlighting the need for vigilance among those traveling on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
Mayor Karen Bass has stated that the city is coordinating closely with the NWS to monitor conditions and keep the public informed. As holiday plans unfold, residents are urged to remain aware of changing weather conditions during this potentially impactful holiday week.
