Rain in the Forecast for the Beloved Rose Parade
Rain Raises Concerns for 137th Rose Parade in Pasadena
Each New Year’s Day, Pasadena becomes the focal point of a century-old tradition as the Rose Parade heralds the start of the new year. However, this year, the forecast suggests a rare occurrence: rain on the parade, the first such weather event in two decades.
Despite the potential for inclement weather, organizers and local businesses remain optimistic that attendance will not be affected. They assert that the Rose Parade is a cherished tradition that draws people together, regardless of the conditions.
“The last time it rained was in 2006, and it was quite heavy. I remember being there myself; the dedicated fans showed up regardless. It’s a tradition,” said Lisa Derderian, Pasadena’s Public Information Officer. In the event’s 137-year history, only ten parades have experienced rainfall, yet Derderian emphasized that the spirit of perseverance prevails, rain or shine.
This year’s theme, “The Magic in Teamwork,” reflects on the challenges faced in Los Angeles throughout the past year, including devastating fires, immigration raids, and rising inflation.
“The fires really hurt, and then we experienced significant ICE raids. I came in one Sunday morning to find my kitchen in disarray and had to reassure my staff individually that everything would be alright. Then tariffs hit, and meat prices skyrocketed,” remarked Armen Shirvanian, owner of Mi Piace Restaurant. He noted that being situated along the parade route typically boosts business for the week surrounding the event.
However, many local retailers and restaurant owners report that revenue has dropped by as much as 70 percent this year compared to 2022, a significant concern as the parade normally attracts around 800,000 visitors.
“We’re excited about welcoming out-of-town teams, especially those with football traditions. Fans from Alabama and Indiana will likely contribute to our business,” said Jack Huang, owner of Hawg Heaven Restaurant. Huang also assured that ample space is available for guests seeking shelter from the potential rain and cold.
For those attending the parade, it’s important to note that umbrellas are prohibited along the route and in the stands, as they can obstruct views and pose safety risks in windy conditions. Attendees looking to secure their spots can begin setting up along the route starting at noon on New Year’s Eve.
