Rachael Leigh Cook Shares Her Thoughts on a Possible ‘Josie & The Pussycats’ Sequel and Its Cult Following
Rachael Leigh Cook Discusses the Cult Following of Josie and the Pussycats
After 25 years since its release, Josie and the Pussycats has garnered a dedicated cult following, yet a reunion tour remains unlikely. Rachael Leigh Cook, who portrayed the titular character in the 2001 film, recently commented on the prospect of a sequel or reboot during an interview with People.
“I don’t think I would need to touch it myself,” Cook stated. “I’m proud of what we made. Maybe if they did some time traveling, maybe there’s something that could be weird and interesting.” However, she noted that there are currently no discussions about reviving the project. “It took long enough for people to get it the first time. We’re not gonna push our luck, I don’t think,” she added.
The film, originally released in 2001, grossed just $14.8 million at the box office. Despite a lukewarm reception, it has since developed a significant following, celebrated for its campy humor and sharp critique of capitalism through clever messaging and bold product placements. The original soundtrack, featuring Kay Hanley’s vocals as Josie, has also contributed to the film’s enduring appeal.
The ensemble cast included Rosario Dawson and Tara Reid, who played Josie’s bandmates, Val and Mel. Alan Cumming and Parker Posey portrayed the villainous Mega Records executives, Wyatt and Fiona, respectively.
Reflecting on the film’s revival, Cook expressed her delight at its newfound appreciation. “It feels awesome after 25 years,” she remarked. “People are rediscovering that movie after it was considered an absolute box-office flop and only getting its flowers as it were in the last couple of years, maybe the last decade or so.”
She concluded, “I’m just grateful for it. It’s easy to make a movie that just sort of falls into the abyss. I’ve certainly made a lot of those… I’m just glad that this very deserving movie ultimately found an audience.”
