Byfield’s decisive goal came off a pass from Artemi Panarin, contributing to a crucial win for the Kings, who have now set an NHL record by playing their 31st game beyond regulation. The game saw a significant momentum shift; after William Nylander missed a breakaway opportunity, Byfield took advantage, scoring his 20th goal of the season on a three-on-two rush.
The victory propels the Kings into the second wild-card playoff position in the Western Conference, preceding a later game between San José and Nashville.
In addition to Byfield, Adrian Kempe made an impressive contribution with two goals and two assists. Samuel Helenius and Alex Laferriere also scored, while goaltender Darcy Kuemper made 14 saves. For the Maple Leafs, Matthew Knies led the charge with two goals, and John Tavares, Easton Cowan, Steven Lorentz, and Nicholas Robertson added to the scoring effort. The Kings initiated the game with an emphasis on a strong start, having been outscored 5-1 in the first period of their last three outings. However, they found themselves down 2-0 at the end of the first period. A resurgence in the second saw Los Angeles net three goals, tying the score twice before Cowan scored on the power play with just 12.5 seconds left, reclaiming a 4-3 lead for Toronto.
In a thrilling third period, Kempe, Helenius, and Laferriere struck in a swift barrage of 1:36, giving the Kings a 6-4 advantage. Yet, the Maple Leafs responded with goals from Robertson and Knies to extend the match into overtime.
