Queen Camilla’s Unique Style Signals a New Chapter in Royal Fashion
Queen Camilla, along with other members of the royal family, attended the Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey on March 9. In a notable departure from royal fashion tradition, Camilla chose to wear opaque black tights paired with a striking red Fiona Clare coatdress, breaking a longstanding convention upheld by her predecessor, Queen Elizabeth II.
Queen Elizabeth was known for her consistent choice of nude or brown tights throughout her reign, avoiding black entirely. While royal fashion guidelines are not codified, certain practices have become customary over the years. This context makes Camilla’s choice particularly significant as she appears to challenge established norms.
At the Commonwealth Day service, the Queen accessorized her outfit with a coordinating Philip Treacy hat, black cap-toed heels by Elito Zed, and a navy blue croc skin bag. Her choice of black tights stood out against the bright red of her coatdress, reflecting a subtle shift in royal style.
Stylist Angela Kyte noted, “Queen Camilla’s choice of black tights is a noticeable departure from one of the most recognizable royal style conventions associated with Queen Elizabeth II. That said, royal fashion rules are rarely as rigid as people imagine.”
By choosing black tights, Camilla not only modernizes her wardrobe but also pays homage to royal tradition through a meaningful accessory. She wore the Queen Mother’s Diamond Palm Leaf Brooch, an antique piece crafted in 1938 by Cartier and adorned with 203 diamonds, adding a touch of heritage and elegance to her look.
Kyte remarked, “What we’re really seeing here is the natural evolution of royal style under a new generation. Camilla is maintaining the formal structure—the tailored coat, statement hat, and classic silhouette—but the darker hosiery subtly modernizes the outfit. It signals that while the monarchy respects tradition, it’s not entirely frozen in time.”
According to Kyte, Queen Elizabeth understood the impact of consistency in her dress, which is why her preference for nude tights became a defining aspect of her image. “Small styling details like hosiery might seem insignificant, but in royal fashion, they carry surprising symbolism,” she explained.
In opting for black, Camilla conveys her own identity within the royal role, honoring traditional attire while putting her own spin on the aesthetic.
