Protests and Vigil for “ICE Out for Good” Happening in Los Angeles: Here Are the Details
Nationwide Protests Erupt Following Fatal ICE Shootings
LOS ANGELES – Nationwide protests erupted overnight in response to two fatal shootings involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, igniting calls for accountability in Southern California and beyond.
The demonstrations are set to continue into Saturday, following the deaths of Keith Porter in Los Angeles and Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis. Activists are also challenging the Trump administration’s actions regarding Venezuela, linking it to these incidents.
The series of events began on December 31, 2025, when Keith Porter Jr., a 43-year-old father, was shot and killed by an off-duty ICE agent at an apartment complex in Northridge. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) described the shooting as a response to an active shooter situation, stating that there was an exchange of gunfire between Porter and the agent.
Porter’s cousin, Jsane Tyler, remembered him as “a great Black man” and a devoted father. His mother, Franceola Armstrong, reflected on her son’s character during a recent Los Angeles City Council meeting, describing him as having "a wonderful soul and big heart."
On January 7, 2026, Renee Nicole Good was shot and killed by an ICE agent in Minnesota. According to reports, Good had just dropped off her 6-year-old son at school when a confrontation occurred involving ICE agents. Her ex-husband characterized her as a loving mother while officials from the Trump administration labeled her a domestic terrorist for allegedly trying to ram her vehicle into agents.
The violence continued a day later when two individuals, identified as undocumented immigrants linked to a gang, were shot by Customs and Border Patrol agents in Portland. The DHS provided their names as Luis David Nico Moncada and Yorlenys Betzabeth Zambrano-Contreras.
The latest developments have prompted several protests across Southern California:
- Downtown Los Angeles: A rally against Good’s shooting is scheduled for 2 p.m. in Pershing Square.
- Pasadena: A protest sponsored by San Gabriel Foothills Indivisible will take place at 10 a.m. at the corner of Garfield Avenue and Colorado Boulevard.
- Woodland Hills: A demonstration will begin at 10 a.m. on the northeast corner of Topanga Canyon Boulevard.
- Palms: Indivisible Westside Los Angeles is set to hold a protest at 2:30 p.m. near the Palms Blvd. overpass.
- Carson: A candlelit vigil is planned for 5 p.m. at Carson Park.
Najee Ali, director of Project Islamic Hope and one of the vigil organizers, stated that the shootings of Good and Porter represent a troubling trend. "They reflect a dangerous pattern of excessive force, poor judgment, and a lack of accountability that is costing innocent people their lives,” he said. “We are coming together to mourn, to demand truth, and to call for justice."
