Prince William Shares a Heartwarming Photo with Princess Diana from 42 Years Ago
Prince William Remembers Princess Diana on Mothering Sunday
On March 15, Prince William commemorated Mothering Sunday in the United Kingdom by sharing a touching, previously unseen photograph of himself and his late mother, Princess Diana. Diana, who tragically passed away in 1997, left an indelible mark on her son’s life, as he was only 15 years old at the time of her death.
The heartfelt image, taken in 1984 when William was about two years old, was selected from the family’s private collection. In the photo, the young prince is seen in a field of flowers with his mother, showcasing a moment of innocence and joy. William captioned the post, “Remembering my mother, today and every day. Thinking of all those who are remembering someone they love today. Happy Mother’s Day.” He signed the post with a simple "W," emphasizing the personal nature of this remembrance.
According to The Telegraph, the photograph was captured at the family’s country home at Highgrove in Gloucestershire.
In a supportive gesture, the royal family’s official Instagram account also acknowledged the occasion, wishing "Mothers everywhere, and those who might be missing their Mums today, a restful Mothering Sunday." This post featured a three-photo carousel, which included a black-and-white image of a young Queen Elizabeth with her mother, as well as images of Queen Camilla with her mother and Prince Charles with Princess Anne, creating a link between generations.
In the nearly 29 years since Diana’s passing due to a car accident in Paris, both Prince William and his brother Prince Harry have frequently spoken about their mother’s enduring influence. In August 2016, William expressed, “Time makes it easier,” but also noted, “I still miss my mother every day.” Reflecting on the complex nature of grief, he remarked in January 2014 that real grief often surfaces later, adding, "For many it is a grief never entirely lost."
These reflections highlight the deep emotional challenges faced by William and Harry as they continue to navigate life without their mother, while also honoring her legacy.
