Prince Harry Compares Royal Family Drama to a Surprising TV Show in a Lighthearted Joke
- Prince Harry attended the British-American Business Council’s 65th Annual Christmas Luncheon in Santa Monica, California, on December 5.
- In his speech, he humorously compared his family to the characters in the television series Downton Abbey.
- “Only one of those worlds is filled with drama, intrigue, elaborate dinners [and] marriages to Americans—and the other is a TV show,” he quipped.
Prince Harry showcased his sense of humor during a recent speech at a Christmas luncheon in Santa Monica, where he drew parallels between his life and the fictional aristocrats of Downton Abbey. The event, hosted by the British-American Business Council, allowed him to reflect on the perception of the royal family among Americans.
“People sometimes ask if growing up with the royal family was a bit like [show creator] Julian Fellowes’ Downton Abbey,” Harry remarked. “Yeah, but only one of those worlds is filled with drama, intrigue, elaborate dinners [and] marriages to Americans—and the other is a TV show.” His comments offered a lighthearted nod to the rumored familial tensions surrounding the monarchy.
Downton Abbey, which premiered in 2010, revolves around the Crawley family and their servants navigating the changing social landscape of early 20th-century England, culminating with a final film released this year.

Recently, Harry seems to be reveling in pop culture. Earlier this week, he appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, joking about royals in Hallmark Christmas movies. “I genuinely thought this was the audition for The Gingerbread Prince Saves Christmas in Nebraska,” he quipped.
Despite his playful self-deprecating humor, Harry’s estrangement from the royal family raises questions about his upcoming holiday plans. Reports indicate that he and his wife, Meghan Markle, are unlikely to spend Christmas in the U.K. Nevertheless, Meghan reportedly still participates in the royal tradition of Christmas crackers. New reports also suggest that their children, Archie and Lilibet, may visit their relatives in the U.K. as early as January.
