Prime Video Cancels ‘The Runarounds’ After Just One Season
EXCLUSIVE: Prime Video will not be renewing the young adult series The Runarounds for a second season.
This decision comes seven months after the debut of its eight-episode first season on September 1. Sources indicate that the cancellation was finalized a couple of months ago. Lilah Pate, the show’s female lead, has recently secured a regular role in the upcoming Tulsa King spinoff, Frisco King, from Taylor Sheridan for Paramount+.
Despite the show’s conclusion, the real-life rock band featured prominently in The Runarounds, consisting of series stars and musicians William Lipton, Axel Ellis, Jeremy Yun, Zendé Murdock, and Jesse Golliher, will continue to perform and is scheduled for a tour that extends through the end of June.
Created by Jonas Pate, co-creator of Outer Banks, and executive produced by the series’ co-creators Pate, Josh Pate, and Shannon Burke, The Runarounds was inspired by the real band of the same name, which was formed in 2021 to perform in the Netflix action-adventure series.
The series was part of Prime Video’s recent expansion into young adult programming, following the success of The Summer I Turned Pretty. This expansion included other notable titles such as Maxton Hall, We Were Liars, and the Culpables movie franchise, along with another series, Motorheads, which also did not receive a second season.
Similar to Motorheads, The Runarounds struggled to achieve significant viewership metrics. It fell short of Nielsen’s Top 10 yet recorded a presence on Luminate’s Top 50 within its initial three weeks, garnering 1.9 million hours watched in the U.S. and ranking at #32 for its opening weekend, followed by 2.2 million (#27) and 1.2 million (#41) in Weeks 2 and 3, respectively.
Produced by Amazon MGM Studios and Skydance Television, The Runarounds chronicles a group of recent high school graduates in Wilmington, North Carolina, who unite over the summer following graduation to form a rock band, driven by their passion for music and their dreams of stardom.
Alongside Lipton, Ellis, Yun, Murdock, Golliher, and Pate, the cast also featured Maximo Salas, Kelley Pereira, Marley Aliah, Mark Wystrach, Brooklyn Decker, Hayes MacArthur, and Shea Pritchard.
The series was executive produced by David Wilcox, who penned the teleplay for the pilot episode, alongside Jonas Pate, Josh Pate, Shannon Burke, Joon Yun, Scott Lambert, and Lisa Mae Fincannon, with David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Matt Thunell representing Skydance Television.
