Philo Introduces New Affordable $25 Monthly Subscription for Streaming Pay-TV
Philo, a prominent player in the streaming pay-TV market, has introduced a new lower-cost subscription option, enhancing its offerings for consumers. The Essential plan, launched on Tuesday, is priced at $25 per month, making it $8 cheaper than the Bundle+ tier, which includes ad-supported access to HBO Max, Discovery+, and AMC+.
Subscribers to the Essential plan can take advantage of a 7-day free trial, a feature not available for the Bundle+ option.
This development comes on the heels of a leadership transition at Philo, which boasts a subscriber base of over 1 million. Andrew McCollum, a Facebook co-founder who led Philo for 11 years and navigated its growth from a college service to a commercial entity, recently stepped down as CEO, passing the reins to Mike Keyserling. Keyserling, who joined Philo in 2014 and previously served in technology roles at HBO, takes the helm amid evolving market dynamics.
Philo stands out as the last remaining independent, scaled streaming pay-TV operator, particularly after Roku’s acquisition of Frndly TV and Disney’s controlling stake in Fubo. Unlike many of its larger competitors, Philo’s lineup features over 70 channels without including traditional broadcast options, focusing instead on general entertainment. This strategic choice has allowed the company to keep costs low, enabling the Essential plan to enter the market at a significantly lower price than similar offerings. For context, YouTube TV’s subscription price has surged from $35 to nearly $83 in just under a decade. While various operators have introduced more affordable genre packages, many of these rival options remain higher than Philo’s.
Philo’s Essential plan offers access to more than 120 FAST channels, alongside over 80,000 on-demand titles and unlimited DVR capabilities, allowing for storage of recorded content for up to one year.
In a recent blog post, McCollum, who remains with the company as executive chairman, emphasized Philo’s commitment to being “a different kind of tech and entertainment company, one driven by innovation, authenticity, and an uncompromising focus on the customers we serve.”
