Philip Rivers Set to Lead Colts Against Seahawks This Sunday
Philip Rivers Returns to NFL, Set to Start for Colts Against Seahawks
In a surprising turn of events, Philip Rivers is making his return to professional football. The 44-year-old quarterback has joined the Indianapolis Colts’ active roster and will start this Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks, according to multiple reports.
Rivers, an eight-time Pro Bowl selection and Hall of Fame semifinalist, last played in the NFL in 2020 before announcing his retirement. In the interim, he had taken on a coaching role at St. Michael Catholic High School in Fairhope, Alabama, where he has been mentoring young athletes, including his son, a four-star quarterback recruit.
The Colts are in urgent need of a quarterback following a challenging week. Starter Daniel Jones is sidelined for the season with a torn Achilles tendon, and rookie backup Riley Leonard is recovering from a knee injury. Although Leonard has participated fully in practice this week and did not have an injury designation, Rivers is poised to lead the team, which is competing with the Rams for the NFC’s top seed.
Adding Rivers to the roster will reset his Hall of Fame eligibility clock, as a player must be retired for at least five years to be considered for induction. However, Rivers has stated that this is not a primary concern for him.
“It’s a real honor to be mentioned with those other 25 guys, certainly,” Rivers remarked about his Hall of Fame candidacy. “But I’m not holding my breath on that. I hadn’t been counting down the years. With all respect to the Hall, if one day I can be part of that group, it will be special, no question about it. But the extension of that timeline, if that comes to be, was not a factor in my thinking.”
Rivers’ unexpected return not only highlights a significant moment in his career but also reflects the ongoing challenges faced by the Colts as they navigate a critical juncture in their season.
