Paul Thomas Anderson Shares Thoughts on the Racial Politics of ‘One Battle After Another’ – Insights from the Oscars Backstage
Backstage at the Oscars, filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson addressed questions surrounding his socio-political family dramedy, One Battle After Another. A journalist inquired about the film’s message to society, particularly in light of its resonance with contemporary issues evident in the news.
“I thought we were supposed to be partying!” Anderson remarked with a sigh before responding earnestly, "Our film obviously has a certain amount of parallels to what’s happening in the news every day, so it reflects what’s happening in the world."
The narrative of One Battle After Another begins with a scene where characters portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio and Teyana Taylor lead an anarchist group in a raid on a military-controlled encampment, freeing prisoners in the process.
When asked about the film’s direction, Anderson reflected, “In terms of where it’s going – I don’t know. But I know that the end of our movie is our hero, Willa, heading off to continue to fight against evil forces. At least, as I mentioned in my speech, we hope to put common decency back into fashion.”
Another reporter probed into the film’s portrayal of Black females and racial politics, seeking Anderson’s thoughts on critiques about these representations.
“I know a little bit about that critique,” said Anderson, a three-time Oscar winner. He acknowledged discussions surrounding Teyana Taylor’s character, which showcases a flawed individual making decisions that impact her revolutionary efforts.
“It’s complicated. We always knew we were trying to make something complicated. We weren’t making something that wasn’t heroic, and we needed to own the fact that this woman was suffering not only from postpartum depression but also from unresolved personal issues,” he elaborated.
Anderson expressed the inherent dangers in pursuing world change while grappling with selfishness, likening it to the anti-hero in Taylor’s previous work, Perfidia. He explained, “The point is to set up the story of Willa, the next generation: What happens when damaged parents hand down a difficult history? How do you manage that?”
The narrative aims to explore this complexity, particularly through the evolution of the character Chase, played by Infiniti.
One Battle After Another has garnered attention for its financial performance, reportedly costing $140 million before marketing and advertising. It has emerged as Anderson’s highest-grossing film, with global box office revenues nearing $210 million. Despite discussions about the film’s profitability, Warner Bros. executives Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy emphasized their ambition to create an original classic for future generations, ultimately winning the film in an auction over Sony.
