Parents Sentenced for the Tragic Death of Their 16-Year-Old Daughter
Mother and Stepfather Sentenced in Torture and Murder of 16-Year-Old
LOS ANGELES – Oriana Estela Elias, 38, and Vincent Gibbs, 39, have been sentenced to 22 years to life in state prison following their conviction for the torture and murder of Elias’ 16-year-old daughter, Pearlene V. The tragic incident occurred in 2021 and has raised significant public concern regarding child abuse.
On March 17, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced the guilty verdicts, which included second-degree murder, torture, and child abuse. The case was marked by horrific details of the abuse, which stemmed from the parents’ anger over Pearlene sending "inappropriate text messages to teenage boys."
During the assault, which took place in a non-functional trailer, Gibbs used a weapon to inflict severe injuries on the victim. Tragically, Pearlene’s sisters witnessed the attack and were reportedly instructed by Elias to lie to authorities about the circumstances surrounding the crime.
In a statement, District Attorney Nathan Hochman condemned the actions of the defendants, stating, "This sentence reflects an unthinkable betrayal by parents, who are meant to protect their children from harm." He emphasized the irreversible loss caused by the crime, noting, "Pearlene was denied the chance to grow up and become who she was meant to be. There is no punishment that can restore the loss of life."
The case highlights the ongoing issues of child abuse and the critical need for protective measures in vulnerable situations.
