Parents in Huntington Park Rally Against Potential Middle School Closure Following Charter Denial
Los Angeles County Parents Protest Potential Closure of Prepa Tec Middle School
Huntington Park parents are expressing their frustration after the LA County Board of Education denied Prepa Tec Middle School’s charter certification due to low test scores and administrative issues. Parents are rallying behind the school, which plays a crucial role in the community.
The board’s extensive report outlines deficiencies, particularly in English and math performance, despite the school being categorized in the middle performance tier. It also highlights ongoing administrative challenges, including the late or missing submission of essential reports for recertification.
In a recent development, school board officials called for a special meeting to discuss the "voluntary" closure of Prepa Tec, amid leadership turmoil. This meeting, however, was canceled due to a lack of quorum after one board member resigned on the same day as the dismissal of the former head of the school, who had been on paid leave since the previous fall. No reasons were officially provided for his dismissal, as it is classified as a personnel matter.
Parents and administrators acknowledge that the school provides invaluable opportunities, particularly for disadvantaged students, including those from low-income and homeless families. “Why compare our scores with those from students in neighborhoods like the West Valley or Beverly Hills?” one parent questioned.
School officials maintain that there is insufficient time to address the low test scores effectively. They argue that a voluntary closure would allow them to regroup and find new placements for the approximately 280 affected students, ideally within close proximity to their current location. However, no official vote has been taken, and they are still exploring alternatives.
Parents are demanding changes in school management rather than punitive measures that would negatively impact students. Their rallying cry—“Fire the board, keep the school”—reflects their determination to seek accountability. They have reached out to LA County Superintendent Dr. Debra Duardo and the LA County District Attorney, requesting an investigation into the situation.
The next meeting regarding Prepa Tec’s future is scheduled for March 10, marking what may be a decisive moment for the school and its community.
