Palm Springs Film Festival Honors Director and Cast of ‘Frankenstein’ with Visionary Award
EXCLUSIVE: The Palm Springs Film Festival is set to premiere a much-anticipated cinematic work next month, featuring a legendary monster.
The festival will honor the film Frankenstein with the 2026 Visionary Award, recognizing director Guillermo del Toro and its principal cast, including Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi, and Mia Goth. This marks the first occasion the award has been granted to both a director and the cast, underscoring what has been described as “one of the year’s most daring and unforgettable achievements.”
“Guillermo del Toro delivers a bold reimagining of a timeless classic, infusing the story with a profound emotional resonance that urges us to consider what it truly means to be human,” remarked festival Chairman Nachhattar Singh Chandi. “Oscar Isaac’s haunting portrayal of Victor Frankenstein, Jacob Elordi’s deeply affecting performance as The Creature, and Mia Goth’s mesmerizing turns as both Elizabeth Harlander and Claire Frankenstein illuminate the film’s central themes with extraordinary power.”
The film Frankenstein premiered at the Venice Film Festival in late August, where it received a remarkable 15-minute ovation. This passionate project from two-time Oscar winner del Toro is a retelling of Mary Shelley’s seminal novel, exploring themes of life, death, love, and the quest for understanding. In the film, Isaac portrays the brilliant yet tortured scientist Victor Frankenstein, whose ambition leads him to create The Creature (Elordi). Christoph Waltz plays Harlander, Elizabeth’s wealthy uncle.
Previous recipients of the Visionary Award include notable directors such as Denis Villeneuve for Dune, Martin Scorsese for The Irishman, Quentin Tarantino for Inglourious Basterds, Alfonso Cuarón for Roma, and Michel Hazanavicius for The Artist. The latter two went on to secure the Best Director Oscar in their respective years.
In addition to Frankenstein, Leonardo DiCaprio will receive the Desert Palm Achievement Award during the festival, while Chloé Zhao’s film Hamnet will be honored with the Vanguard Award.
The Palm Springs International Film Festival, which launched in 1990, will take place from January 2-11, 2026. The film awards ceremony is scheduled for January 3 at the Palm Springs Convention Center.
