Oscars Set to Move from Hollywood to Downtown LA in 2029
Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Announces Relocation of the Oscars
LOS ANGELES – In a significant shift for the prestigious Academy Awards, the Oscars will move from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood to the Peacock Theater at L.A. Live beginning in 2029. This transition marks the end of a 27-year tradition at the Dolby Theatre.
The Academy confirmed that the 101st Oscars will take place at the new venue under a decade-long residency agreement with AEG, ensuring that the awards will remain in downtown Los Angeles through at least 2039. AEG plans to implement substantial upgrades to the theater, enhancing its stage, sound, and lighting systems, as well as improving lobbies and backstage facilities.
This relocation reflects broader changes in the media landscape, with the Oscars’ broadcast shifting from ABC to YouTube for its centennial celebration. The Academy’s long-time association with Hollywood Boulevard will conclude with the landmark 100th Oscars in 2028.
In a joint statement, Academy CEO Bill Kramer and President Lynette Howell Taylor conveyed their enthusiasm for the new partnership with AEG. "We are thrilled to partner with a global powerhouse like AEG. Their track record for building and operating technologically sophisticated live performance venues is unrivaled. For the 101st Oscars and beyond, the Academy looks forward to closely collaborating with AEG to make L.A. Live the perfect backdrop for our global celebration of cinema," they stated.
Todd Goldstein, AEG’s chief revenue officer, noted, "L.A. Live was built to host the moments that define culture, and there is no greater global stage than the Oscars. We’re proud to partner with the Academy to reimagine what the Oscars can look and feel like in the years ahead."
The Oscars at the Dolby Theatre have become a staple of Hollywood since 2002, culminating in the final broadcast from there in 2028. Following this transition, the 101st ceremony at the Peacock Theater will usher in a new era for the iconic awards event.
As preparations begin, AEG will be implementing the necessary upgrades to meet the Academy’s broadcast standards. Additionally, discussions between the Academy and YouTube will explore how this digital format will influence traditional elements of the ceremony, including the red carpet presentation, starting in 2029.
The timeline for these upcoming changes includes:
- 2002 – 2028: Oscars held at the Dolby Theatre.
- 2028: The 100th Oscars serve as the final event at the Hollywood venue, marking the end of the ABC telecast.
- 2029: The 101st Oscars transition to the Peacock Theater and start streaming on YouTube.
- 2029 – 2039: The initial ten-year agreement with AEG is in effect for the downtown venue.
