Odessa A’zion Withdraws from Film Adaptation of Deep Cuts
Odessa A’zion has announced her withdrawal from the upcoming film adaptation of Deep Cuts, just weeks before filming was set to begin. The actress shared the news on her Instagram Stories amid growing backlash regarding her casting in the role of Zoe, a character of Mexican heritage.
The 25-year-old actress, known for her role in Marty Supreme, faced criticism for stepping into a character that represents a cultural background distinct from her own. A’zion stated, “Guys!! I am with ALL of you and I am NOT doing this movie. F— that. I’m OUT,” clarifying her stance in response to the public uproar.
A fan on X raised concerns about whether Zoe would remain a Latina character or be altered due to A’zion’s casting. This prompted author Holly Brickley to acknowledge that changes are common in adaptations, stating, “surely it will be rewritten," which further fueled the controversy.

Fans took to social media to express their disappointment about the casting. One user remarked, “Zoe is supposed to be a poc Mexican… very disappointed with the cast, especially since it’s mentioned several times in the book.” Another suggested, “How about casting an actual Latina for the role of Zoe Gutierrez?!?!!”
In her response, A’zion reaffirmed her support for those who voiced concerns. “THANK YOU guys for bringing this to my attention. I AGREE WITH EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU! This is why I love you guys. I’m so sorry that this happened,” she wrote.
She clarified the circumstances surrounding her casting, revealing she was initially interested in a different role. “I went in for Percy, but was offered Zoe instead and instantly said yes! I’m so pissed y’all, I hadn’t read the book and should have paid more attention to all aspects of Zoe before accepting,” she explained. A’zion emphasized that she did not want to take the opportunity from someone who would be a better fit.
“I can’t wait to see who it ends up being,” she added, expressing excitement for the film despite her departure.
The actress also mentioned that her busy schedule had hindered her from reading the book sooner and that she regretted not understanding Zoe’s character fully before her casting decision.

A’zion was set to portray Zoe Gutierrez, the close friend of music critic Percy Marks, played by Cailee Spaeny. The film follows two music-obsessed characters, Percy and Joe, who develop both a partnership and a romantic relationship in a 2000s setting.
Initially, Austin Butler and Saoirse Ronan were slated for lead roles but withdrew due to scheduling conflicts. The A24 film will be directed by Sean Durkin, who will also serve as a producer alongside Eli Bush, Ronald Bronstein, and Josh Safdie, director of Marty Supreme. Brickley is expected to take on the role of executive producer.
A24 has yet to comment on A’zion’s departure from the project.
