Folk-rock artist Noah Kahan has spoken out against the growing divide between genuine fans and what he describes as “parasitic” autograph seekers. His comments follow a recent viral moment involving pop star Chappell Roan, who confronted aggressive followers on the streets of Paris.
In an Instagram Story posted on Tuesday, March 10, Kahan shared Billboard‘s report on Roan’s experience, in which she told a crowd to “get away from me.” Kahan expressed his support, questioning, “Maybe they should just idk leave her alone?”
He further criticized those proclaiming to be “huge fans,” stating, “Also those dudes saying ‘I’m a huge fan’ following her around are scalpers and are as bad as the paparazzi. F–k em all.”
In a subsequent video, Kahan expanded on his sentiments, noting, “These people literally find out where you’re staying, where you’re flying in to… they are clearly not your fans.” He accused them of using manipulative tactics to extract autographs for resale, adding, “They trick people into thinking that someone’s being rude… they’re scummy, they’re manipulative, they’re parasitic.”
Roan garnered attention the day before Kahan’s remarks when a video surfaced of her addressing a crowd in Paris. In the clip, she candidly told her audience, “I’m just trying to go to dinner, and I’ve asked these people several times to get away from me,” as she was pursued for autographs and photos.
She emphasized her distress, stating, “These are all the people that are completely disregarding my boundaries. All of you, I’m asking you kindly to please leave me alone… No, I’m not gonna sign. This is what it’s like, if you were wondering how it is.”
This incident isn’t Roan’s first instance of asserting her boundaries. In 2024, she confronted a photographer on the VMAs red carpet who allegedly told her to “shut the f–k up.” Following the incident, Kahan expressed his admiration for Roan’s defense on X, recalling his own negative experiences with photographers at a pre-Grammy gala and praising her bravery.
As Kahan prepares for the release of his upcoming album, The Great Divide, on April 24, he has already generated buzz with the title track, which debuted on January 30, topping the Alternative Airplay chart and entering the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 6.
