Nico Iamaleava, UCLA’s Quarterback, Will Be Back in 2026
Nico Iamaleava Commits to UCLA for Upcoming Season
In a significant boost for UCLA’s football program, quarterback Nico Iamaleava has announced his decision to return for the upcoming season under new head coach Bob Chesney. This development comes as the Bruins aim to rebound from a challenging 3-9 record from the previous year.
Iamaleava, who made his announcement via Instagram, shared a highlight video along with a message that read, “NO PLACE LIKE HOME. Back with my brothers. Same vision. Same goals. Same grind. Locked in. Time to work!”
This return may not only enhance Iamaleava’s prospects for the NFL draft through a strong season but also help to mend his reputation after a tumultuous exit from Tennessee during the 2025 spring practice, which drew considerable criticism. By committing to stay with UCLA, Iamaleava will also have the opportunity to play alongside his brother, Madden, a redshirt freshman quarterback.
In the tumultuous 2025 season, Iamaleava faced considerable challenges, yet he stood out as the Bruins’ leading passer and rusher despite the team’s overall struggles. The offensive line’s issues left him vulnerable, culminating in 27 sacks. Nonetheless, he accounted for 17 of the team’s 24 touchdowns and led UCLA with ten plays gaining 20 yards or more.
Over the course of the season, Iamaleava completed 64.4% of his passes for 1,928 yards, recording 13 touchdowns against seven interceptions. His ability to evade pressure and make significant ground gains was evident, as he led the team with 505 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 112 carries.
Moreover, Iamaleava emerged as a strong leader, openly addressing the team during tough moments. After an 0-4 start, he challenged teammates to commit to the remainder of the season, a call that resonated as the Bruins subsequently won three consecutive games.
With Iamaleava’s commitment, Coach Chesney gains a pivotal asset as he works to establish a solid foundation for the program moving forward.
