Rob, 78, and Michele, 70, reportedly felt “enormous guilt” over their inability to help Nick manage his struggles, the insider revealed.
In his early twenties, Nick had already undergone more than 18 stints in rehab. He co-wrote the film Being Charlie, which focuses on addiction and was directed by his father in 2015. The family had hoped the film would bolster Nick’s confidence.

In promoting Being Charlie, Nick discussed his “dark years,” while Rob expressed his desperation to assist his son through challenging times.
During a 2016 podcast, Nick noted that growing up under the shadows of his famous father and grandfather, Carl Reiner, who passed away in 2020, contributed to his substance abuse. “I had no identity, and I had no passions,” he reflected. “I wanted to edge out my own identity with a more rebellious, angry, drug-addicted sort of persona.”

A family insider stated that despite being a “tight-knit family,” Rob and Michele struggled to find stability for Nick, having tried various approaches to help him. “It’s just a parent’s worst nightmare,” the insider said, praising the couple’s unwavering efforts to support their son.
Following the tragedy, Rob and Michele’s other children, Jake, 34, and Romy, 28, expressed their profound grief in a statement. They shared, “Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day,” adding, “They weren’t just our parents; they were our best friends.”
In a 2015 BUILD Series interview, Rob discussed his parenting philosophy, emphasizing that he was not inclined to embrace the concept of “tough love.”
