Nick Reiner Appears in Court for Hearing in His Parents’ Murder Case
Nick Reiner Faces Court Over Parents’ Murders
LOS ANGELES – Nick Reiner is set to appear in a Los Angeles courtroom Wednesday for a crucial hearing regarding the murders of his parents, renowned director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele. This hearing will determine if there is sufficient evidence for the case to proceed to trial.
The charges against the 32-year-old stem from the December 14, 2025, stabbing deaths of his parents in their Brentwood home, following a reported argument. Rob, 78, and Michele, 70, were both found dead from multiple sharp force injuries inflicted by a knife, as confirmed by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner.
Nick Reiner, the couple’s third child, was arrested by LAPD officers less than six hours after the discovery of their bodies in Exposition Park. He has pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder, with special circumstance allegations of multiple murders. Although prosecutors are considering the possibility of seeking the death penalty, the defense has indicated that meticulous investigations will demonstrate his innocence.
Nick Reiner has a documented history of mental health challenges, including a schizophrenia diagnosis and a conservatorship that ended in 2021. In his recent court appearance, he pleaded not guilty in the ongoing case.
While investigators have described Nick’s behavior as "erratic" during a holiday party prior to the incident, they have yet to confirm any official motive. Additionally, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office has not made a final decision regarding capital punishment for the case, according to District Attorney Nathan Hochman.
A full autopsy report is still pending, which Deputy District Attorney Habib Balian indicated is a crucial element required for the defense’s preparation.
In a heartfelt statement, Nick’s brother, Jake Reiner, referred to the situation as an "impossible nightmare." He expressed the profound impact of losing both parents simultaneously and grappling with his brother’s legal battle.
As the court convenes, a timeline for the preliminary hearing will be established. Should the case advance to trial and result in a conviction, Nick Reiner could face either the death penalty or a life sentence without parole.
