Nicholas Brendon, renowned for his role as Xander Harris in the cult classic television series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” has died at the age of 54. His family confirmed the news on Friday, stating he passed away in his sleep from natural causes.
“We are heartbroken to share the passing of our brother and son, Nicholas Brendon,” the family wrote in a Facebook post. They fondly referred to him by his nickname, “Nicky,” and highlighted his legacy as an actor known for bringing beloved characters to life.
Brendon achieved fame through his portrayal of Xander Harris on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” which captivated audiences from 1997 until 2003. Beyond his acting career, his family revealed that he had developed a passion for painting and visual art in recent years, sharing this creative journey with family, friends, and fans.
“He was passionate, sensitive and endlessly driven to create," they stated. "Those who truly knew him understood that his art was one of the purest reflections of who he was.”
In a separate statement provided to The Hollywood Reporter, the family disclosed that Brendon had been living with a congenital heart defect and was undergoing treatment. “While it’s no secret that Nicholas had struggles in the past, he was on medications and treatment to manage his diagnosis and he was optimistic about the future at the time of his passing,” they noted. They also requested privacy as they grieve and commemorate the life of someone who lived with intensity and heart.
In addition to his iconic television role, Brendon appeared in films such as “Psycho Beach Party” and “Celeste in the City.” According to his IMDb biography, he also served as a spokesperson for the Stuttering Foundation of America, further demonstrating his commitment to supporting others.
