Niall Horan Shares What He Steers Clear of When 1D Friends Are on Tour: ‘It Wouldn’t Make Sense’

With all former members of One Direction now pursuing solo endeavors, it’s increasingly likely to see multiple members touring simultaneously. During this competitive landscape, Niall Horan has taken a thoughtful approach to his concerts.
In an interview with NME released on Friday, March 27, the Irish pop artist discussed his process for curating setlists, particularly his selections from One Direction’s extensive catalog. Horan has previously featured songs such as “Fool’s Gold,” “Drag Me Down,” “Night Changes,” and “Story of My Life” in his solo performances.
“I just play my favorites, I suppose,” Horan explained. “And I try to stay away from it if the lads are doing it — if Harry [Styles] is touring and he’s playing ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ every night, it’d be a bit stupid for me to do the same song at the same time. Or Louis [Tomlinson] did ‘Drag Me Down’ on his first tour, so I kept away from that, and then I did it the next time.”
Horan also expressed his views on some of the more underappreciated tracks from One Direction’s five-album discography. “I think ‘Steal My Girl,’ just got to say it, it’s underrated,” he remarked. “Hot take. It was robbed of its day in the sun. I think ‘Fool’s Gold’ is underrated.”
Currently, Styles’ Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally holds the No. 1 position on the Billboard 200 chart for a second consecutive week, while Horan’s upcoming album, Dinner Party, is set to release on June 5. Both artists are planning to embark on tours in 2026. Meanwhile, Tomlinson is actively touring in support of his January release, How Did I Get Here?, and Zayn, who exited One Direction in 2015, has recently launched his fifth album, Konnakol, with a tour scheduled this year as well.
