New Year’s Enforcement Campaign Launching by CHP
California Highway Patrol to Intensify DUI Enforcement Ahead of New Year’s Eve
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is set to enhance its enforcement efforts in Los Angeles and Orange counties, as well as statewide, beginning Wednesday night. This initiative targets drunk and drug-impaired drivers as part of the agency’s New Year’s anti-DUI campaign.
Starting at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, all available officers will be deployed to identify impaired motorists, speeding violations, and other traffic offenses during the New Year’s "Holiday Enforcement Period." This campaign follows a similar enforcement effort that took place during the Christmas holiday.
"We’re entering a New Year, but our message stays the same: Driving under the influence increases the risks on our roads, raises the chance of a crash and puts lives in danger," said CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee. He emphasized the importance of responsible decision-making behind the wheel.
The 2024-25 New Year’s enforcement period is expected to draw on experiences from previous years. During the 2024-25 period, CHP reported 481 arrests statewide, a decrease from 892 arrests made during the 2023-24 campaign. This variance is attributed to last year’s holiday falling midweek, which limited the campaign’s duration. In contrast, the previous year’s effort lasted for three full days and nights due to the holiday weekend.
The enforcement campaign will continue until late Thursday night, reinforcing the CHP’s commitment to road safety as the New Year approaches.
