New Series “Beat The Reaper” by Sam Catlin Features Will Poulter Coming to Apple TV
Apple TV has announced the acquisition of the new dramedy series Beat the Reaper, adapted from Josh Bazell’s novel of the same name. Will Poulter, known for his roles in Black Mirror and The Bear, is set to star as well as serve as an executive producer. Sam Catlin, acclaimed for his work on Sugar and Breaking Bad, has adapted the novel for television and will take on the roles of showrunner and executive producer. The series is produced by Apple Studios in collaboration with New Regency.
In Beat the Reaper, Poulter portrays Dr. Peter Brown, an intern working in one of Boston’s most challenging hospitals. Although talented in medicine, Brown harbors a secret past he would rather keep hidden. His life takes a dramatic turn when a patient recognizes him from his previous dangerous life, giving him just eight hours to escape threats from the government, mob assassins, and dubious medical practitioners.
Bazell’s debut novel, released in 2009, blends dark comedy with thrilling elements. It centers on Peter Brown, a medical resident who is also in the Federal Witness Protection Program due to his history as a mafia hitman. When a dying mobster arrives at his hospital, the stakes become personal as Peter must either save the mobster or risk revealing his past.
The Beat the Reaper series will be executive produced by Catlin as part of his overall deal with Apple TV. Executive production for New Regency is handled by Arnon Milchan, Yariv Milchan, and Natalie Lehmann.
Poulter’s notable television credits include FX’s The Bear, Hulu’s limited series Dopesick, and Barry Jenkins’ The Underground Railroad. He is also set to appear in several upcoming films, including Union County alongside Noah Centineo, the horror project Rapture, as well as the Netflix drama Saturn Return, and the sci-fi comedy I Love Boosters. He is currently represented by WME, Hamilton Hodell, and Sloane Offer.
