New Paranormal Activity Film in Development with Paramount and Blumhouse-Atomic Monster; James Wan Steps In as Producer
New Chapter for the Paranormal Activity Franchise
In a significant development for the Paranormal Activity franchise, Jason Blum will produce the eighth installment alongside Oren Peli, the director of the original 2007 film. Joining them is James Wan, a prominent figure in horror filmmaking, who is new to the franchise following the merger of Blumhouse and Atomic Monster. Steven Schneider will serve as executive producer for Room 101, while Michael Clear and Judson Scott will produce for Blumhouse-Atomic Monster. Alayna Glasthal will oversee the project for the company.
Details about the upcoming film remain largely undisclosed, but it is considered a priority for both Paramount Pictures and Blumhouse-Atomic Monster, which will co-finance and co-produce the film. Paramount is responsible for worldwide distribution.
Since its inception, Paranormal Activity has become a hallmark of the found footage genre, following in the footsteps of The Blair Witch Project. The franchise began with a micro-budget film that achieved remarkable success, grossing approximately $193 million globally—one of the highest returns for any horror film in contemporary cinema. With a focus on households plagued by demonic forces, the franchise has expanded to include seven films. The most recent entry, Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin, was released in 2021, contributing to a combined gross of over $900 million worldwide.
The original Paranormal Activity not only established Blumhouse as a powerhouse in the horror genre but also paved the way for successful franchises like Insidious, Ouija, The Purge, and Happy Death Day, solidifying Blumhouse’s reputation as a leading producer in the industry.
