Netflix Teams Up with Meryl Streep for ‘The Corrections’ in Exciting New Series
Netflix Secures ‘The Corrections’ Adaptation Starring Meryl Streep
Netflix has successfully acquired the screen rights to The Corrections, based on Jonathan Franzen’s acclaimed 2001 novel, in a highly competitive bidding process. The limited series will feature three-time Oscar winner Meryl Streep in the lead role, with Franzen himself adapting the book for television. Oscar-winning director Cord Jefferson, known for American Fiction and Watchmen, will helm all episodes. The series has received a straight-to-series order from Paramount Television Studios.
Under the guidance of VP Nora Skinner, Netflix’s acquisition of The Corrections is part of its ongoing efforts to bolster its prestige drama lineup. Jinny Howe, Head of UCAN (U.S. and Canada) Scripted Series, has prioritized this aspect of the programming slate since bringing Skinner on board from HBO in 2024.
The Corrections joins several other notable projects for Netflix, which have been secured through intense bidding wars. This roster includes Rabbit, Rabbit, starring Adam Driver, which is slated to begin production; Enigma Variations with Aaron Taylor-Johnson; and So Far Gone, a creation of writer Mark Bomback. Other projects in the works include Black Hole, based on graphic novels by Charles Burns, and Weather Girl, featuring Julia McDermott.
Franzen’s novel, which won the National Book Award, explores the complexities of a Midwestern family as its three adult siblings grapple with their mother’s desire for a final Christmas together. All three siblings strive to distance themselves from the expectations of their parents, leading to a darkly humorous narrative.
Streep will portray the matriarch, Enid. Alongside her, Franzen, Jefferson, and Mark Roybal, known for Task and Mare of Easttown, will serve as executive producers, alongside Paul Lee and former Paramount TV Studios President Nicole Clemens.
Netflix secured the rights to The Corrections from Paramount TV Studios, which is a part of Paramount, a company that recently outbid Netflix for Warner Bros. The project marks a notable shift in dynamics, as it was reportedly pitched to Paramount+ but ultimately won by Netflix. HBO previously attempted a pilot adaptation from Noah Baumbach over a decade ago but did not pursue it after an all-star cast recorded a pilot.
This acquisition illustrates Netflix’s aggressive strategy to fill its programming pipeline, contributing to a robust list that has recently included projects like Next Door, with Tessa Thompson, and several others with straight-to-series orders. Previously, HBO had developed a pilot featuring a star-studded cast including Chris Cooper and Ewan McGregor, which did not progress.
Beyond The Corrections, Paramount Television Studios has produced Netflix hits like Emily in Paris and XO, Kitty. Recently, Netflix also secured U.S. streaming rights for the studio’s series The Mayor of Kingstown from Taylor Sheridan.
This marks Streep’s third lead role in a limited series, having previously won Emmys for both Holocaust and Angels in America, with additional nominations for Big Little Lies and Only Murders in the Building. In film, Streep is set to reprise her iconic role as Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada 2.
Jefferson, who received an Oscar and BAFTA Award for his American Fiction screenplay, was also honored with an Emmy for his work on Watchmen. He is represented by CAA and 3 Arts, while Franzen is repped by Rich Green at The Gotham Group and Susan Golomb at Writers House.
