Netflix Releases New True-Crime Documentary ‘The Crash’ Focusing on a Teen Driver’s Crime
EXCLUSIVE: In 2022, 17-year-old Mackenzie Shirilla deliberately crashed her car into a brick wall in Ohio, resulting in the deaths of her boyfriend, Dominic Russo, and his friend, Davion Flanagan.
Following the incident, Shirilla was arrested and charged with murder. She was subsequently convicted on 12 felony counts and sentenced to life in prison, with a judge labeling her “hell on wheels.”
This high-profile case is set to be featured in Netflix’s upcoming true-crime documentary, The Crash, which is scheduled to launch on May 15. The film is produced by Raw, a company owned by All3Media.
Raw has an established relationship with Netflix, having produced successful series such as Don’t F**k With Cats and the Trainwreck franchise, which includes the Poop Cruise documentary, recently renewed for a second season.

On the night of the crash, Shirilla was driving Russo and Flanagan home from a party in Strongsville, Ohio. Initial investigations treated the crash as a tragic accident, but as detectives examined the wreckage, suspicions grew that it was a calculated act.
Netflix’s The Crash delves into the turbulent relationship at the center of this case, exploring the complex narratives surrounding that night and raising questions about where a fatal mistake might transition into cold-blooded murder, according to the platform’s description.
The documentary is directed by Gareth Johnson, known for previous true-crime works including Sky’s The Body Next Door and Netflix’s The Puppet Master: Hunting The Ultimate Conman. Producers include Angharad Scott from Reframed: Marilyn Monroe, with Rebecca North and Jonny Taylor serving as executive producers from Raw.
Shirilla’s case has also been highlighted in other documentaries, including A&E and Channel 4’s series Killer Cases and Investigation Discovery’s Mean Girl Murders.
