Netflix Announces New Limited Series ‘Enigma Variations’ Starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson After Jeremy Allen White’s Exit
Aaron Taylor-Johnson, known for his roles in 28 Years Later and Nosferatu, will lead the cast of Enigma Variations, a limited series recently approved by Netflix. Adapted from André Aciman’s acclaimed novel, the project comes from Media Res and marks a significant shift, as Taylor-Johnson replaces Jeremy Allen White, who was originally set to star.
The series, penned by Amanda Kate Shuman, who also serves as showrunner, will be directed by Oliver Hermanus. Taylor-Johnson plays Paul, a character whose identity evolves through relationships that shape and challenge him over a decade. The narrative presents an intimate yet expansive exploration of masculinity, sexuality, and contemporary love, posing a poignant question: how do we recognize true love amid myriad choices?
Reflecting the themes of the original book, Paul’s character is sexually fluid, navigating relationships with both male and female partners.
Shuman is joined as an executive producer by Hermanus, along with Michael Ellenberg and Lindsey Springer of Media Res, Aciman, and Monica Levinson. Media Res is also the studio behind this production.
Initially, Enigma Variations was slated for Netflix over a year ago with White attached to both star and executive produce. After he withdrew from the project at the close of 2025, a search for a replacement ensued, leading to Taylor-Johnson entering negotiations shortly thereafter.
This project signifies Taylor-Johnson’s American television debut, as he has several films in the pipeline, including Werwulf, Blood On Snow, and Cry To Heaven. He is represented by Brillstein Entertainment Partners, WME, and Sloan Offer Weber & Dern. Shuman is represented by UTA and HJTH, while Levinson is with CAA.
Media Res has a busy schedule ahead with Season 5 of The Morning Show for Apple TV, The Miniature Wife, starring Elizabeth Banks and Matthew Macfadyen for Peacock, The Dealer, with Jessica Chastain and Adam Driver for Apple TV, The Chain for HBO, and the drama pilot Durango for Hulu.
