NBCUniversal and YouTube Discuss Future Oscars TV Rights for 2029 and Beyond
NBCUniversal is set to make a strategic move following its decision to drop the Golden Globes in 2023. The media giant has been focusing on its own People’s Choice Awards franchise, while also experiencing significant success with live events such as the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, which recently attracted a record-breaking 34.3 million viewers across NBC and Peacock.
In the ongoing discussion about the future of the Academy Awards, NBCU joins YouTube, which expressed interest in hosting the Oscars earlier this summer. Amazon has also been mentioned as a potential candidate for the awards, but its level of interest remains uncertain.

Netflix, known for streaming the Actor Awards, has reportedly no desire to pursue the Oscars, according to sources.
The bid for the Oscars gained traction this spring when the Academy’s exclusive negotiation window with ABC expired. Sources noted at that time that the Academy sought a licensing fee increase, which ABC was unwilling to accommodate, resulting in a stalemate and prompting the Academy to explore options with other networks and platforms.
Reports indicate that Disney, ABC’s parent company, and the Academy have not resumed discussions since that breakdown, although the option remains for the two to re-engage regarding future broadcasts.
Meanwhile, Disney is anticipating the arrival of the Grammy Awards in 2027.
