Jones of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Quartay DeNaya from Pizza Guys Vs Vampires, and wrestler Daria Rae Berenato.
The film is set in a fictional Historically Black College and University (HBCU) and follows the story of Tavon Watkins, portrayed by Truitt, who becomes involved with a secret fraternity of Black martial artists following a harrowing hazing incident. Watson co-authored the script with Jerron Horton, who is known for his work on Forever.
Joining the cast are wrestler Jamara Garrett, also known as Mara Sadé, experienced stuntman and martial artist Sam Lee Herring, and martial artist Jair Muhammad. Production is expected to commence in March in Tampa, Florida.
Producers Shaun Greenspan, Brian Yuran, and Berenato aim to create a franchise, with Taimak and Walter E. Jones serving as executive producers. Watson emphasized the cultural significance of the film, stating, “Martial arts have been a part of the Black American experience for generations, and our film brings that excellence to the forefront from a perspective that has rarely, if ever, been seen in American cinema.”
In a joint statement, producers Yuran and Berenato expressed their enthusiasm for the project, explaining that its compelling narrative resonated with them immediately upon reading the script. “They have crafted a dynamic character piece with an action twist. This story transcends all cultures and Tavon is a protagonist for all.”
