Mrs. Willis: A Beloved LAPD Volunteer for 22 Years, Just Like Her Movie Star Son
Marlene Willis: A Pillar of Support at LAPD’s West LA Station
Marlene Willis, affectionately known as Mrs. Willis, has made a significant impact over her 22 years volunteering at the Los Angeles Police Department’s West LA station. Remarkably, she is also the mother of actor Bruce Willis, although she rarely discusses this connection.
At 90 years old, Willis brings a sense of warmth to a challenging environment, earning her a reputation as a key asset to the department. "I want to help so much, so much. You have no idea. You cannot imagine how much I want to help," she expressed, highlighting her unwavering commitment.
Former LAPD Chief Michel Moore praised her dedication, noting, "I think she means the very best of people that are individuals who believe in the work that our men and women do." Willis dedicates her Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays to assisting the community by reviewing police reports and ensuring proper grammar and clarity.
Colleagues at the West LA station speak highly of her presence, claiming it can brighten an officer’s day. In moments of distress, such as after troubling incidents, her caring gestures—like offering hugs—are deeply valued by every member of the team. "Mrs. Willis is a very integral part of West Los Angeles and the LAPD," stated Captain Rich Gabaldon, commanding officer of the West LA station. "She is an icon here."
Her dedication has not gone unnoticed; Mrs. Willis was honored as the LAPD Volunteer of the Year by then-Chief Moore, who further recognized her efforts by presenting her with a badge, signifying the highest symbol of police service. Reflecting on her contributions post-retirement from his home in Tennessee, Moore remarked, "There are people in our lives that when you cross their path, they leave a lasting impression. You are one that has risen to the top of one of the best impressions."
Visitors to the LAPD station may be surprised to learn of her connection to the Hollywood actor, as she seldom mentions her son or includes him in her volunteer work. The only hint is her screensaver, which features a photo of her and Bruce Willis embracing.
Despite being a proud mother and grandmother, Mrs. Willis emphasizes the closeness she feels to her work family at the LAPD. "This is my family," she stated, expressing her heartfelt dedication to the community she serves.
