Increased Patrols Planned for St. Patrick’s Day Amid DUI Concerns
As St. Patrick’s Day approaches, law enforcement agencies throughout Los Angeles and Orange counties are ramping up efforts to ensure safety on the roads. With festivities often accompanied by alcohol consumption, officials urge party-goers to make transportation arrangements in advance.
The Los Angeles Police Department will initiate saturation patrols starting Tuesday afternoon in various locations, aiming to identify and deter impaired drivers. This initiative is part of a broader strategy that involves collaboration with other agencies. The California Highway Patrol and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department will also increase their presence, actively searching for those driving under the influence.
Burbank police will deploy extra officers between 6 p.m. Tuesday and 2 a.m. Wednesday, specifically targeting motorists suspected of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Torrance will similarly increase its patrols from 5 p.m. to midnight.
Officials caution that driving under the influence, whether of alcohol, marijuana, or prescription drugs, poses a significant risk to public safety. According to the sheriff’s office, an impaired driving arrest and subsequent conviction can incur costs exceeding $15,000 in legal and court fees.
Safety statistics underscore these concerns; the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicates that St. Patrick’s Day is one of the deadliest times on U.S. roads, accounting for over 30% of all traffic fatalities. Law enforcement advises individuals to consider ride-share services or public transportation if a designated driver is not available, reinforcing the importance of responsible decision-making during the celebrations.
