Milly Alcock Addresses Fan Reactions to ‘Supergirl’ and Shares Thoughts on Superhero Movie Critiques from Martin Scorsese and Ridley Scott
Milly Alcock is set to join the DC Universe this summer as Supergirl, stepping into a role that has ignited strong enthusiasm among comic book fans.
This isn’t Alcock’s first experience with dedicated fandom; she previously portrayed a young Rhaenyra Targaryen in HBO’s House of the Dragon, a spinoff of Game of Thrones.
“It definitely made me aware that simply existing as a woman in that space is something that people comment on,” Alcock noted in an interview with Vanity Fair. “We have become very comfortable having this weird ownership of women’s bodies. I can’t really stop them. I can only be myself.”
When asked about industry veterans like Martin Scorsese and Ridley Scott who have expressed skepticism toward the superhero genre, Alcock responded, “I get it. They’ve been around for fucking ever making phenomenal films. Not every film is for everyone. The beauty of art is that you can be selective.”
Based on Tom King’s 2022 comic book series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, illustrated by Bilquis Evely, the film’s screenplay was adapted for the big screen by Ana Nogueira. In the comic, Supergirl and a young alien girl named Knolle journey across the galaxy to track down Krem of the Yellow Hill, who has brutally murdered Knolle’s father.
Set to premiere in theaters on June 26, Supergirl features Alcock in the lead role, alongside Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hills, Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll, David Krumholtz as Zor-El, Emily Beecham as Alura In-Ze, and Jason Momoa as Lobo.
