Midseason Baseball Update: Tyler George from Santa Margarita Is Hitting His Stride
Midseason Highlights in High School Baseball
As the high school baseball season reaches its midpoint, attention turns to standout players making significant contributions to their teams. Beyond mere statistics and rankings, several athletes are demonstrating exceptional skill and determination on the field.
Leading the pack is sophomore pitcher Tyler George from Santa Margarita. With an impeccable record of 7-0 and an impressive 0.85 ERA, George has only issued two walks across 41 1/3 innings. Standing at 6-foot-5 and weighing 190 pounds, the 16-year-old exemplifies the prowess expected of a top-tier pitcher.
Few anticipated George’s rise to prominence, except perhaps his freshman coach, Mike Hiserman. “He was the most fundamentally sound all-around freshman baseball player I’ve ever coached. He was good at everything yet still immensely coachable. You tell him something once and he does it,” Hiserman remarked.
George attributes his success to a strategic mix of pitches, including fastballs, curveballs, sliders, and change-ups. “Just not overthrowing the ball, not throwing as hard as I can but hitting the spots and having a feel for my off-speed pitches,” he explained. His most notable performance came during a dramatic 1-0 victory against Mater Dei, where he pitched all nine innings. “It was a lot of fun. The adrenaline was running. It was cool,” he reflected.
Adding to his story, George’s younger brother, Hayden, is a freshman pitcher at UCLA. Tyler mentioned that Bruins coach John Savage has inquired about him, indicating interest as he becomes available for recruitment in the summer.
Other notable players this season include Dustin Dunwoody of Royal, who boasts a remarkable 7-0 record with an astounding 0.18 ERA and 74 strikeouts over 39 1/3 innings. Meanwhile, Orange Lutheran’s senior catcher Brady Murrietta continues to shine, throwing out baserunners while leading his team with 12 RBIs.
In addition, several players are carving out their own paths. Troy Randall from Corona Santiago is hitting .460 with 29 hits while also making a mark as a relief pitcher. Jake Kim of Harvard-Westlake has maintained a .500 batting average with four home runs, making him a formidable presence in the lineup.
Sherman Oaks Notre Dame’s Malakye Matsumoto is delivering for his team with 22 hits and 17 RBIs, while Tate Belfanti from Cypress shines with 53 strikeouts in 28 innings. Junior Jake Ange of Thousand Oaks has also made headlines with seven home runs this season, further solidifying his impact on the field.
The midseason landscape is rich with talent, as players like Dylan Seward, James Tronstein, and Gary Morse continue to contribute significantly to their teams. As the season progresses, these athletes will surely remain in the spotlight, showcasing their skills and potential futures in the sport.
