Host Rachel Martin prompted Melinda to elaborate on trust during their conversation. Melinda admitted, “Of course,” when asked if it took longer for her to rebuild trust, further acknowledging her fears that she might not be able to trust again.
“I trusted myself though,” she continued. “But I have learned that with the right person, you can, and it’s baby steps at first, and you build on that.”
Since her divorce, Melinda has been linked to Philip Vaughn, with the couple making their public debut on the red carpet last year.
When asked about her ability to forgive, Melinda stated, “Yes, I think I am,” but cautioned that forgiveness often requires time and cannot be rushed.
She elaborated on the topic, noting that it takes time to process the pain we inflict upon each other and to figure out how to move forward. “If you can’t eventually forgive somebody, then you hurt yourself,” she added, emphasizing her commitment to seeking forgiveness.
Regarding Bill, Melinda chose to keep her thoughts private, stating, “I think I’m gonna keep that one to myself,” but also called it a “work in progress,” concluding, “I think I’m getting there.”
Melinda and Bill Gates announced their divorce in 2021 after 27 years of marriage. In her memoir, The Next Day, she discussed the deterioration of their relationship and the influence of Bill’s infidelities and links to Epstein.
During her conversation with NPR, Melinda expressed “unbelievable sadness” over the recent Epstein allegations involving Bill, which his representative described as “absolutely absurd and completely false.”
Melinda called for a societal reckoning: “No girl, no girl should ever be put in the situation that they were put in by Epstein.” She reflected on how these topics evoke memories of painful times in her marriage but affirmed that she has moved on.
She noted that unresolved questions regarding her ex-husband and his past are not hers to answer, stating, “They need to answer to those things, not me.”
Melinda concluded by expressing her relief in having moved away from the difficulties of her previous relationship: “I am so happy to be away from all the muck that was there.”
