Mekhi Phifer Reflects on the Meaning of Success in Acting
Mekhi Phifer, known for his notable contributions to 1990s cinema and television, emphasizes that genuine success as an actor transcends social media prominence.
The 51-year-old actor has made his mark with roles in influential films such as Clockers, Soul Food, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, and 8 Mile. He also played Dr. Charles Pratt on the NBC medical drama ER.
During the Lifetime event celebrating new movie releases on January 28, Phifer expressed gratitude for his career, calling it "a blessing."
"It’s always a blessing to be appreciated for your work," he stated. "I’ve been doing this since ’94, and it’s always been about the work. This was before social media, and I never really got caught up in that."
Phifer elaborated on his dedication to the craft: "It’s always been about the work, the integrity of the work. I’m constantly challenging myself, doing different things, and honing my skills while exploring diverse characters and genres."
When asked what advice he would offer to up-and-coming actors, Phifer said, "Be focused on the real task." He added, "The task is the work. Anyone can gain five minutes of Instagram fame, but to build a career lasting over three decades requires hard work and dedication."
Phifer is set to appear in the Lifetime movie Be Happy, which premieres in February. He noted, "It feels great to dive into new roles."
Reflecting on his career, he shared, "I feel very blessed to constantly be working and portraying different stories. To express our artistic prowess is always a blessing."
