Meet the San Bernardino Football Player Chasing His Dreams After a Cancer Diagnosis
San Bernardino Valley College Football Player Diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma Remains Committed to His Dreams
Torryn Pinkard, a 21-year-old college football player from San Bernardino Valley College, is facing a daunting challenge following his diagnosis with Ewing sarcoma — a rare and aggressive cancer affecting soft tissue and bone. Despite this setback, his passion for football remains unwavering.
Football has always been an integral part of Pinkard’s life. He expresses that the sport not only defines him but also drives him to strive for excellence. In pursuit of a professional career, Pinkard and his family made the significant decision to relocate from Nevada to California, hoping to fulfill his dream.
However, mere weeks into this new chapter, he received the life-altering diagnosis. “I just wanted to be back on the field, honestly,” Pinkard shared. “I had just gotten back out there, and I got ripped right away.”
Despite the difficulties posed by his illness, Pinkard is committed to maintaining his athleticism and supporting others battling cancer. He hopes that his journey can serve as an inspiration to those facing similar struggles. “He’s the strongest in the weight room, he’s the first one on campus and he’s passionate about everything he does,” noted James Griffin, the football coach at San Bernardino Valley College.
Even while undergoing chemotherapy, Pinkard prioritizes his fitness, maintaining a rigorous exercise regimen. “I go to the gym like three times a day. I feel like being in the gym just makes me feel better,” he said.
The community at San Bernardino Valley College has come together in support of Pinkard, creating the hashtag #T-Strong to rally behind him and assist with his medical expenses. “They’ve all been supportive, and everybody that’s found out has stepped in and been really supportive,” Pinkard expressed, highlighting the power of solidarity during his challenging journey.
