Los Angeles Chefs Among Finalists for Prestigious James Beard Awards
Finalists for the 2026 James Beard Restaurant and Chef Awards, often dubbed the "Oscars of the culinary world," were announced this week, showcasing a strong representation from Los Angeles. Winners will be revealed on June 15 in Chicago.
Several local talents have been nominated across multiple categories, reflecting the diverse culinary scene in the city. Among the notable nominees are:
Best Chef: California
Dave Beran of SELINE: This Santa Monica restaurant, led by Beran, offers a luxurious 14 to 17-course tasting menu that draws on Southern California’s vibrant flavors. The dining experience spans approximately 2.5 hours and costs $295 per guest. Beran is also the owner of Pasjoli, where actor Jeremy Allen White trained for his acclaimed role in the series "The Bear."
Kwang Uh of Baroo: Located in downtown LA’s Arts District, Baroo is a modern Korean restaurant that blends traditional dishes with contemporary flair. The establishment is co-managed by Uh and his wife, Mina Park.
Outstanding Chef
Gilberto Centina of Holbox: At this acclaimed Mexican seafood counter located in South LA’s Mercado La Paloma, Centina serves an 8-course tasting menu for $130 per guest, highlighting coastal Mexican cuisine. Holbox recently earned a Michelin star and marks Centina’s return to James Beard nominations after receiving a nod for Best Chef: California in 2023.
Niki Nakayama of n/naka: This Michelin-starred establishment is celebrated for its 13-course Japanese kaiseki experience, which marries Japanese culinary traditions with Californian ingredients. The tasting menu is priced at $395 per person.

- Fátima Juárez of Komal: Juárez operates a stall in Mercado La Paloma, specializing in dishes featuring nixtamalized Mexican heirloom corn. Her menu reflects the vibrant street food culture of Mexico City.

- Ki in Los Angeles: Situated in Little Tokyo, Ki has quickly become a favorite for its Korean-influenced tasting menu that incorporates global elements.
Outstanding Hospitality
- Providence in Los Angeles: Renowned for its innovative seafood offerings, this fine dining venue on Melrose is equally recognized for its inviting atmosphere.
Outstanding Wine and Other Beverages Program
- Kato in Los Angeles: Known for its Omakase-style tasting menu, Kato also provides an impressive beverage selection, featuring various tasting flights that enhance the dining experience.
Outstanding Professional in Beverage Service
- Jack Benchakul of Endorffeine: At this stylish espresso bar in Chinatown, Benchakul offers a unique coursed desserts and drinks experience influenced by his Thai heritage.
Local Honorees Expand Beyond Chefs
In addition to the nominees, the James Beard Foundation has announced several honorees, all connected to Los Angeles. The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles (CHIRLA) received the Impact Award, while the Humanitarian of the Year Award went to "Not Us Without You LA," a food relief organization founded by Othón Nolasko and Damián Diaz. Nancy Silverton, a renowned chef and co-owner of the Mozza Restaurant Group, was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award for her extensive contributions to the culinary industry over the last four decades.
Silverton, the first-ever James Beard Award recipient for Pastry Chef of the Year in 1991 and the Outstanding Chef award winner in 2014, is credited with igniting the modern bread movement and enhancing public understanding of food craft and tradition through her cookbooks.
As the June awards ceremony approaches, these nominations and recognitions underscore the exceptional culinary talent flourishing in Los Angeles.
