Meals On Wheels in Santa Monica Needs Your Help After Freezer Breakdowns
Meals on Wheels West Faces Setback After Freezer Failure
A Santa Monica-based nonprofit dedicated to delivering meals to homebound individuals is seeking community support following a breakdown of its freezers, which resulted in the spoilage of hundreds of meals.
On Monday morning, staff at Meals On Wheels West discovered that their freezers were malfunctioning. The organization, which serves seniors, veterans, and individuals with disabilities from Marina del Rey to Malibu, reported that significant amounts of food had to be discarded.
"While we do store our food in multiple freezers, we did lose about half of our food for our clients (Monday)," said Executive Director Kaylee Hawkins. "Just under 200 meals that we lost for people who were depending on food for today."
Despite the setback, Hawkins noted that the organization managed to provide meals to most clients on Tuesday. However, the loss of nearly $1,000 worth of food has added to the challenges the nonprofit faces amid rising gas and food costs due to inflation.
In light of these difficulties, Meals On Wheels West is appealing for donations, monetary or in the form of new freezers. The community’s assistance is crucial as the organization works to continue supporting those in need.
