Margot Robbie Channels Victorian Elegance for ‘Wuthering Heights’ Press Tour
Outrage Surrounds Costuming of "Wuthering Heights" Amidst Red Carpet Debuts
The release of the first trailer for Emerald Fennell’s adaptation of "Wuthering Heights" has sparked considerable debate over its costuming choices. Amid this discourse, Margot Robbie and her stylist Andrew Mukamal have embraced historical elements on the red carpet, albeit with a modern twist.
Robbie’s recent appearances have incorporated fashion elements reminiscent of the eras corresponding to Emily Brontë’s literary world—though not always with strict adherence to historical accuracy. Notably, her wardrobe selections meld influences from various periods, creating a unique style statement. For instance, Robbie wore a striking Roberto Cavalli dress that combined a Tudor-inspired square neckline, an 18th-century painting-inspired necklace by Fausto Puglisi, and a mini-skirt hemline evoking the 1960s.

While fans seeking historical accuracy may wish to revisit Robbie’s previous press tour for the 2023 “Barbie” film—where she meticulously recreated iconic outfits from the Mattel collection—those with an eye for fashion history find her red carpet choices a rich source to analyze. Both "Barbie" and "Wuthering Heights" share distribution under Warner Bros., which is affiliated with CNN’s parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery.
At the film’s London premiere, Robbie donned a striking boned corset dress designed by Dilara Findikoglu. The piece, featuring Victorian lace, also included braided synthetic hair dyed to mimic the hair color of the Brontë sisters. Its design drew inspiration from Victorian mourning jewelry, further connecting the outfit to the themes of mortality and remembrance. Adding to the ensemble, Robbie wore a replica bracelet that Charlotte Brontë had crafted in memory of her sisters.

Earlier this week, during a photo call in London, Robbie showcased a John Galliano brocade frock coat paired with a black mini skirt and thigh-high scarlet stockings. This archival piece, part of Galliano’s Spring-Summer 1992 collection, reflects the romance of the Napoleonic era, which resonates with the settings of Brontë’s narrative.

In his role as stylist, Mukamal has been referencing "Wuthering Heights" directly, even sharing pertinent quotes on social media to provide context for their fashion choices. His previous work included dressing Robbie in feathered Victoria Beckham outfits and drawing textual connections to the characters’ emotional turmoil in Brontë’s story.
While critics may debate the historical accuracy of these red carpet looks, they undoubtedly serve as a captivating exploration of fashion history and literature, blending modern aesthetics with classic influences.
