Hulu Announces Malcolm in the Middle Revival
On December 5, Hulu unveiled the first teaser for its upcoming four-episode revival series, Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair, set to premiere in 2026. The teaser humorously referenced a classic scene from the pilot episode of the original series, which first aired in 2000. The scene features Lois (Jane Kaczmarek) shaving her husband Hal’s (Bryan Cranston) back, an iconic moment that showcases the show’s unique blend of humor and family dynamics.
According to the official synopsis, the revival follows Malcolm as he is "dragged back into [his family’s orbit] when Hal and Lois demand his presence at their 40th anniversary party." Over the past decade, Malcolm has kept himself and his daughter distanced from the family, adding layers of complexity to the narrative.
The revival is expected to reunite original cast members, including Cranston, 69, and Frankie Muniz, who played Malcolm. Confirmations of the cast also include Kaczmarek, Justin Berfield, and Christopher Masterson. However, Erik Per Sullivan will not return as Dewey; his character has been recast, with Caleb Ellsworth-Clark taking over the role, while Anthony Timpano will portray Jamie, the family’s youngest son.
Cranston shared insights about the revival on a podcast, stating his conversation with Per Sullivan, who has shifted career paths since his time on the show. "I talked to Erik and I said, ‘Hey, we got the show! It’s going to come back.’ He goes, ‘Oh, that’s fantastic!’ But he doesn’t want to participate," Cranston recounted during his appearance on Fly on the Wall with Dana Carvey and David Spade.
"He’s actually going to Harvard. He’s really, really smart, and he’s getting his master’s at Harvard right now," Cranston added, noting that Per Sullivan has not acted since childhood.
Muniz expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating, "I had the best time of my entire life… filming this reboot." He remarked on the challenge of condensing 20 years of story into four 30-minute episodes, but he remains optimistic that fans will be pleased with the results.
As anticipation builds for Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair, the revival promises to capture the spirit of the original show while exploring new avenues in the characters’ lives.
