Malcolm In the Middle Revival Hits 8.1 Million Views in Just 3 Days, Becomes Top Debut for Disney+/Hulu in 2026
Nostalgia is booming at Disney, following the successful debut of the Scrubs revival on ABC and Hulu. The return of another beloved single-camera comedy from the 2000s, Malcolm in the Middle, also opened with impressive numbers, garnering 8.1 million global views within the first three days, making it the top season premiere across Disney’s streaming services, Disney+ and Hulu, for 2023.
Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair, available on Hulu in the U.S. and Disney+ internationally, recorded 3.6 million views in Latin America, marking it the second-largest season premiere on Disney+ in the region, following Loki Season 1.
The April 10 launch of the four-episode revival spurred considerable interest in the original series, which experienced an increase of 18 million hours viewed in the past week—an increase of 107% compared to the previous week. Disney reported over 1 million engagements, 17 million views, and nearly 19 million impressions from social media and YouTube content related to the revival.
Marketing efforts for the revival included a NASCAR appearance by star Frankie Muniz, who drove a custom-wrapped Malcolm in the Middle Ford F-150 at the Bristol Motor Speedway. However, Muniz did not finish the race due to a crash.
In this new installment, titled after the original series’ theme song, Malcolm, portrayed by Muniz, is pulled back into his family’s life after a decade of separation when his parents, Hal (Bryan Cranston) and Lois (Jane Kaczmarek), ask him to attend their 40th anniversary party.
The cast of Life’s Still Unfair includes Christopher Kennedy Masterson and Justin Berfield, reprising their roles as Malcolm’s brothers, Francis and Reese, respectively. New faces in the series include Caleb Ellsworth-Clark as Dewey, succeeded from Erik Per Sullivan, along with Anthony Timpano and Vaughan Murrae as Jamie and Kelly, and Keeley Karsten as Malcolm’s daughter Leah and Kiana Madeira as his girlfriend Tristan.
Produced by Disney Branded Television, the limited series is developed by 20th Television and New Regency. The revival was written by the original series creator, Linwood Boomer, who also serves as an executive producer alongside Cranston, Tracy Katsky of KatCo, Gail Berman, and New Regency’s Arnon Milchan, Yariv Milchan, and Natalie Lehmann. All four episodes were directed by Ken Kwapis, who is also an executive producer, with Jimmy Simons and Laura Delahaye as co-executive producers.
