On January 22, the One Direction alum appeared on NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where he revealed that Easter eggs embedded in his new album, How Did I Get Here?, unintentionally caused a buzz among Swifties. The album was released the following day, January 23.
At 34, Tomlinson described the creative process for this record as a comfortable experience. “I felt really comfortable making it; I really enjoyed the process,” he told host Jimmy Fallon. “I even enjoyed doing the promo, which is a new thing for me.”

Tomlinson admitted that not all aspects of his album’s promotion were planned. In the lead-up to the release of the first single, “Lemonade,” he dropped hints that generated fan speculation, notably among Swift’s fanbase. “It’s good watching people scramble for that stuff,” Tomlinson remarked. “Another thing that was cool about it was Taylor Swift’s fans seemed to get a bit confused, thinking somehow it was related to her album. So, I got free promo.”

Reflecting on his journey with One Direction, Tomlinson shared, “Every moment, every memory that I have with One Direction is incredibly special, obviously.” He acknowledged that transitioning to a solo career after being part of a boy band can be daunting. “It’s not for the faint-hearted,” he noted.
In a recent cover story with Billboard, he expressed the “really f—ing scary” feeling he experienced at 24 when he sensed the end of One Direction was near. “I was never thinking, ‘I’ll be in that group [of One Direction alumni] that succeeds,’” he said.
Tomlinson will embark on the How Did We Get Here? world tour, starting on March 23 at the Barclays Arena in Hamburg, Germany, followed by a North American leg beginning June 3 in Vancouver, Canada.
His album, How Did I Get Here?, is now available.
