Lorde Contributes $100,000 from Merch Sales to Support Minnesota Immigrant Funds
New Zealand singer-songwriter Lorde is taking a stand in response to the recent political turmoil in Minneapolis. This follows a lengthy ICE operation in the city that resulted in the deaths of two civilians in January.
On February 3, Lorde announced via her Instagram Story that she would donate $204,000 from merchandise sales made during her October concerts at the Minneapolis Armory. She stated, “I’m donating our merch take in Minneapolis to Minnesota Immigration Rights Action Committee + Immigrant Defense Network.”
Alongside her announcement, Lorde shared a photo of herself, with her face cropped out, featuring the phrase “ICE Out” written in black marker on her hand.
The Minnesota Immigration Rights Action Committee is a grassroots organization dedicated to supporting families impacted by ICE actions, including raids and deportations. The Immigrant Defense Network consists of over 90 various organizations committed to protecting the rights of immigrant communities across Minnesota, providing crucial resources and legal support.
Lorde’s charitable contribution comes amid struggles faced by many immigrant families in Minneapolis, where ICE operatives have increased their presence. The tension peaked in January after the fatal shootings of civilians Renee Good and Alex Pretti by ICE officers, drawing widespread national criticism and public outcry.
While the Trump administration has stated that these incidents were acts of self-defense, many in the public contest this narrative, with eyewitness video suggesting otherwise. Lorde’s “ICE Out” message resonates with similar sentiments expressed by various celebrities at the recent Grammys, including Billie Eilish and Justin and Hailey Bieber.
Lorde is not alone in her support for Minneapolis. Fellow artist Lizzo recently shared a video encouraging action among her followers, and on January 30, Tom Morello hosted a “Concert of Resistance & Solidarity” in the city, featuring performances by Bruce Springsteen, who has been vocal in his activism against ICE operations.
Supporting her Billboard 200 No. 2 album, Virgin, Lorde’s Ultrasound World Tour began in September, covering North America and Europe through mid-December. She plans to continue her tour with upcoming shows in Australia and New Zealand later this month.
