Local Costa Mesa Resident Passes Away Following Rattlesnake Bite
Young Man Dies After Rattlesnake Bite in Irvine
A 25-year-old man, Julian Hernandez of Costa Mesa, has died following a rattlesnake bite sustained during a mountain biking trip in Irvine. The incident occurred on February 1 at the Quail Hill Trailhead, as reported by law enforcement and members of an Orange County Eagle Scouts troop.
Hernandez was bitten by the venomous snake while biking and attempted to reach medical assistance on his own. Unfortunately, he was overwhelmed by the effects of the snake’s venom and fell into a coma shortly thereafter, according to Eagle Scouts Troop 106. He remained unconscious and ultimately passed away on March 4.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Department confirmed Hernandez’s death was a direct result of the snake bite.
Nationally, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that between 7,000 and 8,000 individuals are bitten by venomous snakes each year in the United States, with an average of five fatalities.
Rattlesnakes are often found in a variety of habitats, including deserts, mountains, and beaches, typically sunning themselves near boulders, logs, or open areas. Immediate access to antivenom is crucial for neutralizing the toxins in victims after a bite.
