Lizzo is set to join the ranks of illustrious children’s authors, including Dr. Seuss and Roald Dahl, with her upcoming book.
On March 16, Lizzo announced her first children’s book, Lil Lizzo Meets Sasha B. Flootin’, during an interview with Gayle King on CBS Mornings.
“Everyone always asked me my origin story with the flute. They’re like, ‘Why flute, how flute?’” Lizzo stated. “This tells the real-life story of how I started playing flute.”
The Houston-born singer expressed her long-standing passion for writing, revealing that before music became her career, she aspired to write “The Great American Novel.”
“This is such a beautiful marriage of everything that’s me,” Lizzo remarked about her new project.
The book’s title is derived from her actual flute, which bears the name “Sasha Beatrice Flootin’ Jefferson Kirkwood Johnson Esquire the III.” The inspiration for the name “Sasha” comes from another Houston legend.
“[Beyoncé’s] such an inspiration to me, especially when I was younger growing up,” Lizzo noted during the interview. “And she had her alter ego. She was like, ‘I’m Beyoncé, but then on stage I’m Sasha Fierce.’”
Relating to Beyoncé’s dual personas, Lizzo described her own experience balancing her studies in flute performance with her entrance into Houston’s rap scene. She explained that she saw the flute as her own alter ego during that transformative period.
“Sasha Fierce. Sasha Floot,” she said, highlighting the connection.
In discussing the book’s message, Lizzo emphasized, “This is a story about finding your voice. And the only way to find your voice is by being yourself and trusting yourself. It doesn’t matter where you are, who you know. At the end of the day, it’s always going to be about you.”
Lil Lizzo Meets Sasha B. Flootin’ is scheduled for release on September 9.
