Lincoln Riley Responds to Penn State’s Interest in D’Anton Lynn: “Let’s See What Happens”
USC Coach Lincoln Riley Addresses Staff Changes as Bowl Game Approaches
Following Friday’s practice, USC football coach Lincoln Riley commented on the status of D’Anton Lynn, who is under consideration for the defensive coordinator position at Penn State. As of now, Riley has no updates regarding Lynn’s situation.
Lynn, previously linked to Penn State last year, recently received a contract extension from USC. He joined the Trojans after a successful term as defensive coordinator at UCLA.
“This time of year, especially with a strong staff, turnover is common,” Riley stated. “While we hope to maintain continuity, these jobs are highly sought after. It’s part of the landscape in college football.”
Riley acknowledged Lynn’s effective work at USC and expressed hope for a positive outcome regarding his future.
“Being prepared for change is essential in today’s college football,” he noted. "Contingency plans are necessary for coaches, players, and staff since circumstances can shift rapidly. Flexibility is key."
As USC (9-3) gears up for its Alamo Bowl matchup against Texas Christian on December 30, Riley described the team’s recent practice sessions as productive, focusing on the present rather than potential departures from the roster.
“Over the past couple of years, we’ve put in the work without dwelling on who’s present or absent,” he remarked. “Our goal is to maximize the moment and build towards the future.”
In roster news, USC announced that redshirt junior quarterback Jayden Maiava has re-signed for the upcoming season, opting out of the NFL draft. This decision comes amid the departures of standout receivers Makai Lemon and Ja’Kobi Lane.
“It’s great to have a returning player with significant experience,” Riley commented on Maiava. “He’s emerged as a strong leader, and it’s encouraging to see the majority of the team re-sign. It demonstrates their commitment to our program.”
Maiava expressed gratitude for his return, highlighting his relationship with Coach Riley and the support of his teammates. “I’m focused on taking it one day at a time and making the right decisions,” he said.
The quarterback also praised Lemon, who recently won the Biletnikoff Award, acknowledging their chemistry both on and off the field.
Defensive end Braylan Shelby echoed Maiava’s sentiments, emphasizing the importance of the bowl game as an opportunity to solidify team unity. “I always knew I wanted to be here,” he stated.
On the topic of re-signings, Shelby noted, “USC is staying ahead of the game, which helps fans understand who is returning.”
Junior safety Christian Pierce, who has re-signed, is eager to step into a potential starting role next fall. "The bowl game is a huge start going into next season in terms of building the culture," he explained.
Riley commended offensive lineman Tobias Raymond for his versatility and leadership on the field. “His toughness and ability to handle various lineups have made him a key player,” he said.
Looking ahead, Riley indicated a shift in strategy regarding the transfer portal. “Our focus will be less reliant on it than in previous years, enabling us to hone in on our specific needs,” he concluded.
As USC prepares for the bowl game, the focus remains on cultivating a strong team culture and fostering leadership among returning players.
